A Midsummer Night's Scream

A Midsummer Night's Scream - R.L. Stine Well. That was quite possibly the worst book I've ever read. I never read Goosebumps as a kid, so I didn't know what to expect. I'm not generally into horror, but since it was a YALSA Teen Top Ten nominee, I gave it a shot. Considering that it's up for a pretty big award, I had higher expectations. After finishing, I honestly have no idea how it made the list, let alone got published. What a bunch of absolute rubbish.

The things I hated:

A detestable main character - she's shallow, a pretty crappy friend, obsessed with having a boyfriend (who is a complete douchebag, but he's a boy, so who cares?), more worried about drowning her "sorrows" in cheesecake than the fact that people she knows are dying. Gee, what's not to love? Hated her. Hoped she was next on the list.

Douchebag boy wonder - Okay, let's go all on and on about how we're so hot for MC's best friend, and then post pictures of us making out with other girl. Yeah, because that's always a sure shot for winning over your ladylove. Did any of this ever deter too-stupid-to-breathe MC? No, of course not. Because I WANT A BOOOOOYYYYYYYFRIEND MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF. Okay, stupid girl, have your douchey boy. No one cares anymore. You're meant to be together out of sheer stupidity.

Parents so obsessed with success that they're willing to continue even at the risk of losing everything, including LIVES - but hey. None of that matters right? We've just got to keep making this movie that is killing everyone or we'll go bankrupt. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME. There are bad parents out there and then there are THESE parents.

A plot that is so loosely based on Shakespeare that I wonder if anyone actually READ the play - Okay, so there's a character named 'Puck' and a bunch of weird potions. Yeah, that doesn't make this a Shakespeare retelling. Sorry.

The things I liked:

Okay, I got nothing. I hated the whole thing. I'd like those two hours back please.
